Explanation of terms related to the paper industry

  1. Paper: Paper is a special material that is made of fibers (mainly plant fibers) and other solid particulate materials (such as sizing materials, fillers, additives and other non-fiber additives). It has a porous network. Special sheet material with physical properties.

  2. Beating: Use physical methods to treat pulp fibers suspended in water to make them have the characteristics required for paper machine production and produce paper or paperboard that meets the quality requirements. This operation is called beating.

  3. Percussion degree: also known as beating degree, it is an index to measure the degree of ease of dehydration of the slurry (water filtration performance). It comprehensively reflects the degree of fiber being cut, swelled, broomed, divided into filaments, and fibrillated.

  4. Wet weight: refers to the wet pulp weight accumulated on the wet weight frame when checking the beating quality by the Shore Beater. It is a rapid measurement value that indirectly indicates the average fiber length.

  5. Concentration: refers to the mass fraction of absolute dry fibers in a certain amount of fiber suspension, expressed as a percentage.

  6. Sizing: According to different sizing effects, sizing methods are divided into internal sizing and surface sizing. Internal sizing is to add the sizing material to the pulp, and then make it into liquid-repellent paper and cardboard. Surface sizing is to coat a thin layer of sizing material on the surface of the paper to make the paper hydrophobic. Surface sizing is mainly used for offset paper, writing paper, and packaging paper and cardboard with liquid repellency requirements.

  7. False sizing: refers to the phenomenon that the sizing degree of the paper is qualified after the paper is dried, but the sizing degree decreases or basically disappears when the sizing degree is measured after the paper is left for a certain period of time.

  8. Dyeing: refers to adding a certain color material to the paper material to selectively absorb most of the visible light spectrum, and the color reflected by the spectrum that is not absorbed but is reflected is the desired color.

  9. Left/Right Hand Paper Machine: Stand at the end of the dry part of the paper machine, facing the direction of the wire, such as the left hand paper machine (Z type) with the transmission equipment on the left, and the right hand paper machine (Y type) with the transmission equipment on the right.

  10. Laid-net forming means that one or more separate forming devices are installed on the Fourdrinier wire table. The paper web is formed on the Fourdrinier wire table in the normal way, and then the paper web formed on the double-wire forming device is added The molding method on it.

  11. Three rates of papermaking:

  (1) The papermaking rate refers to the completion rate of paper on the reel, the formula:

  Copy amount

  Copying rate = ——————————×100%

  Papermaking amount + papermaking loss

  (2) Yield rate refers to the percentage of finished paper, the formula:

  Quantity of qualified finished products

  Yield rate = ——————————×100%

  Copy amount

  (3) Qualified rate refers to the percentage of qualified finished products in finished paper, the formula:

  Quantity of qualified finished products

  Qualification rate = ——————————×100%

Total product volume (explanation of relevant terms in the paper industry)
